This project is designed to pull together multiple technologies to bring an enhanced level of heating, that is more comfortable and energy efficient. The long term vision is that this will not only help to alleviate fuel poverty for tenants, but that savings made will help fund future roll outs.

Project Summary

  • The project will use mCHP to provide lower cost electricity to run heat pumps, and to then use Sunamp energy storage, to deal with the slow production of heat versus the need to draw heat quickly within the households.
  • By using electricity converted from lower cost gas, and then generating and storing heat in a very energy efficient manner, the project will bring a direct cost saving, to the social housing tenants. This saving is estimated at 75% when compared with night storage heaters.
  • The housing associations have the potential to greatly improve their housing stock and service to their customers while generating benefits to their organisation, e.g.
    • Reduced rent arrears
    • Reduced costs of heating communal areas
    • Reduced cost of maintenance and water heating
    • Improved health and safety standards
    • Compliance with fuel poverty reduction and carbon targets
    • Compliance with the tightened Scottish Quality Housing Standards
  • It is envisaged that this project will generate a business model that is replicable across other sites, with only minor modifications required. The cost savings, plus potential benefits from RHI and FIT will help fund future upgrades and enable more social housing tenants to benefit from the additional comfort of low cost heat.
