Vision

Sustainable Cupar proposes extensive use of PV integrated into a new development. Excess summer generation would charge a borehole thermal energy store. Fourth generation district heating would use this to heat homes in the winter, and provide domestic hot water all year round. The aim is Zero Energy Building.

 

Project Summary

Sustainable Cupar proposes extensive use of PV integrated into a new development. The concept is that PV panels would cover whole roofs, and replace normal roofing materials. This would provide significant domestic electricity even throughout winter months. Excess summer generation would charge, by use of heat pumps, a borehole thermal energy store. Fourth generation, low energy, district heating would use this to heat homes in the winter, and provide domestic hot water all year round. The aim is Zero Energy Building, or even a “PlusEnergy” system. Sustainable Cupar would like to go further by integrating the use of electric vehicles into the system.

The use of a smart interface with the grid would also enable the borehole thermal energy store, and electric vehicles, to provide for a wider use of renewable energy in the local electricity grid.
Sustainable Cupar envisages extending the district heating system to serve the existing town, and encouraging the use of electric vehicles, which would lead to an overall reduction in the total carbon footprint of Cupar even with the new development.

Sustainable Cupar believes this proposal could provide an example that would be replicated by other communities.
