Vision

Renewable energy is presently being wasted on Eday due to electricity grid constraints, leading to reduced income for community groups and business. This project will capture that energy, convert it into hydrogen and then use it Renewable energy is presently being wasted on Eday due to electricity grid constraints, leading to reduced income for community groups and business. This project will capture that energy, convert it into hydrogen and then use it to benefit the local community.

Project summary

Wind and tidal turbines on Eday are heavily curtailed due to the electricity grid constraints, and their owners lose electricity sales and government ROC support. This project will convert that energy into hydrogen in an electrolyser and provide buffer storage. This hydrogen may then be converted into a range of uses for the local community, including heating fuel, transport fuel, or as a chemical feedstock for conversion to fertiliser or methane. All of these end uses will be studied in detail during Phase 1 to determine the most appropriate.
