Kingussie Private Wire Connection & Modification to Gold Clubhouse Distribution System

Project lead: Kingussie Community Development Company (KCDC)

Partners: N/A

Award Amount: £13,500

Status: Complete

Area: Kingussie (Highlands)

Established in 2006, the KCDC has been attempting to restore a ninety year old hydro scheme that is envisions will provide an income through Feed in Tariffs to be used for the benefit of the community over the next twenty years, while also providing the electricity generated from the hydro plant to the nearby Golf. The possibility of a direct grid connection was considered by KCDC prior to submission of this project application to CARES IIF, through a study produced by Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD). This report determined that it would be cheaper to install a private wire connection to the Kingussie Golf Club’s Clubhouse, which would provide electricity directly to the clubhouse, thus supporting another community group. The present IIF grant has been used to fund track laying activities, a renewal of the Gold Club’s switchboard, and invested in a data logger.

Learning Point(s)

Two years prior to submission of this IIF application, the KCDC sought to purchase the woodland that would include the site required for this hydro project. The company drew on strong “in-kind” skills of its members, and invested in good relationship development with the relevant agencies, such as the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), as well as Spey Fisheries, in order to manage the risk associated with land ownership at an early stage in the process.

Local Energy Scotland Advice: Receiving permissions and/or purchasing land can be a lengthy process, and so engaging as early as possible with the relevant consenting authority will mean that you can develop a more appropriate, and accurate project plan that accommodates for this.
