Business Rates relief guidance for community projects
The Scottish Government offers a package of relief to support community and local energy aspirations. They are:
- Rolling forward existing rates relief of up to 100%
This is for qualifying community and shared ownership renewables projects. Eligibility thresholds for shared ownership aspects have also been widened from 1 MW to 0.5 MW.
- Capping non-domestic rate bill increases at 12.5% (real terms)
This is for existing small-scale (up to 1MW) hydro-schemes and is for 2017/18, as part of a wider measure covering other property types. There will be further support considered as part of the 2018/19 budget and other reliefs will be kept under review after 2017/18.
- A new 50% relief for District Heating Systems
Don't forget, other renewable developments could still be eligible for the small business bonus scheme (for which the 100% relief threshold has gone up to £15,000 rateable value). In addition, micro generation plant and machinery continue to be permanently exempt from non-domestic rates valuation.
